The sunscreens sold at Ruohonjuuri.com are friendly to both skin and environment. Unlike chemical lotions, certified natural cosmetics sunscreens do not damage corals.

Hawaii recently restricted sales of sunscreens because chemical sunscreens have been found to damage coral reefs. With the number of vacationers on the island of Hawaii hovering around eight million annually, the solar products used in the resort are important to the island’s vulnerable ecosystem. Many chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octyl methoxycinnamate, which have been studied to fade coral colors.

As responsible choices are a matter of the heart for both us and our customers, we investigated the situation of natural cosmetics sunscreens sold at Ruohonjuuri in detail.

Certified natural cosmetics sunscreen product ranges do not (and according to the requirements of the certificate may not even contain) substances dangerous to corals.

Prohibited substances are often misinterpreted in the case of zinc and titanium dioxide, as it is precisely nanosized particles, or so-called "nanoparticles", that is prohibited. This means that zinc or titanium dioxide in nanoparticle size is banned in natural cosmetics. Certified natural cosmetics sunscreens do not contain nanoparticles and therefore do not damage water bodies or corals. For a sunscreen to really be natural, it only needs to contain mineral filters and no chemical filters at all. Thus, only zinc and titanium dioxides act as mineral filters, says Taneli Jaakonsaari, who imports the Alga Maris sunscreen series, which has become a favorite of Ruohonjuuris customers.

Because zinc and titanium dioxide are harmful to nature only in nanoparticle size, Jaakonsaari says that Alga Maris series products are fully allowed in Hawaii as well.

If you want to avoid those physical filters for natural cosmetic-quality sunscreens altogether, you can get mild sunscreen from karanja- or coconut oils. Due to the variability of sunscreen in these natural oils, they should not be officially declared sunscreens. From the point of view of skin protection, it is safest to choose a natural cosmetic-quality sunscreen, with a tested protection factor.
